RAC- Religious Action Center for Reform Judaism

RAC coordinated meetings between more than 5,000 Reform Jews and 47 Senate offices to urge them to pass two federal bills that would protect the freedom to vote in every state. Subsequently the Freedom to Vote Act (S. 2747), which is based largely on the For the People Act (S.1), was introduced and is likely to be brought to a vote in the next couple of weeks.

It is expected that the Freedom to Vote Act will run into the same issue with the filibuster that S. 1 faced. RAC is encouraging the Senate to reform the filibuster to allow a vote on S. 1 and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act.  The forces for and against the freedom to vote are evenly split in the Senate. We need push pro-voting Senators to work as hard as possible and anti-voting Senators not to stand in the way. We also need to put pressure on President Biden to use all of his persuasion and political pressure to make sure the Senate has the votes to reform the filibuster.

There are two actions RAC is encouraging us all to take:
1)    Join the Freedom to Vote: Heeding the Call zoom gathering on October 6 at 8:00pm ET. Ben Jealous, President of People for the American Way will talk about the status of the freedom to vote legislation, and Rabbi Jonah Pesner, Director of the Religious Action Center will speak on the Reform Movement’s impact.

Please register for the Freedom to Vote: Heeding the Call zoom gathering on October 6 at 8:00pm ET using the following link:

2)    Prepare to make calls and get others in your community to make calls to your Senators and to President Biden during the Reform Movement Call-in Week November 8-11 to make sure the filibuster does not prevent the two Freedom to Vote bills from passing.

RAC will send out a link to the RAC web page that has talking points, phone numbers and materials. It is essential that calls are made through the RAC site so they can track the effectiveness of the call-in day. Talk with others in your congregation or Reform community about how many people your congregation can get to join the call-in week.

During the October 6 zoom event, Joy Friedman, RAC’s Director of Organizing, will talk about what you and other members of your congregation can do to make the November phone banking days a success. RAC will be asking your congregation to set a goal for the number of calls that members of your congregation or community will make.
